For many WIC recipients, getting to the grocery store is a challenge. But a little creativity and collaboration and a lot of hard work brought the store to Jefferson County residents.

Community Wellness Coordinator Jessica Martini, NEP Advisor Julie Threadgill and Jefferson County HHS Educator Savannah Stout partnered with Unvarnished Farm, Summer Solstice Farms, Sadona Farms, the Food and Growers Association and the Madison Community Grocery Project to open a pop-up market at the Jefferson County WIC office.
The goal: To provide families with free local produce, nutrition education resources and a connection with local farmers planning to accept electronic Farmers Market Nutrition Program (eFMNP) benefits this summer.
“It was a fantastic day full of good food, education, and fun!” said Jessica.

The event drew 120 parents and children. They received nutritious food for their families and were invited to sign up for eFMNP benefits from June through September. Families also had the opportunity to taste test salad and stir-fry recipes prepared by Julie and Savannah.

The food was provided by Unvarnished Farm, Summer Solstice Farms, and Sadona Farms. The Food and Growers Association coordinated produce donations. This produce was made available by the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA).
